Classic cars descended upon Lake Orion on Saturday, when the first annual Orion Senior Center Classic Car Cruise was held at Golling Pontiac-GMC.
According to Orion Senior Center Director Lisa Sokol, over 220 cars and around 1,000 people attended the event.
?(It) surpassed all of our expectations,? Sokol said, adding that the event was so successful that talks are already in the works for next year’s cruise.
Along with the classic cars, local businesses also participated by hosting booths. Food, beverages, ice cream and sports memorabilia were for sale, and Pee Wee Patch hosted a kids? area featuring a bouncy house, pony rides, face painting and more.
Oldies 104.3 WOMC was on hand at the event, and trophies were given out in various categories.
Local organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and the Sunrise Rotary Club participated, and some members of the UAW Local even came out of contract negotiations to be present at the event.
‘It was really nice to have the community come together,? Sokol said of the collaborative event, noting that the day would not have been possible without Golling and help from volunteers.
She added that along with many adult volunteers, many kids earning service learning hours also helped in making the event successful.
There was one more key ingredient, according to Sokol, and that was volunteer Bill Kokenos.
‘We have to thank Bill a 100 times over,? she said. ‘He deserves a ton of credit for reaching out and seeing the vision of the event.?
Sokol added that she received a lot of positive feedback from those that attended, and the Senior Center is looking forward to the second annual event (to be held in 2008).
