Local generosity fueled summer fun for over 50 kids that were able to attend summer camps thanks to supporters of the Orion Area Youth Assistance (OAYA) Adopt-A-Camper program.
Through donations from Orion Township, Oxford/Orion FISH, Carey Colleen Women’s Auxiliary, Orion Oaks Elementary Student Council, Pine Tree PTO, the Bastian Family and Totally Hair Salon, the OAYA was able to sponsor attendance for 56 students at day camps this summer.
Campers attended programs through Oakland County Parks, Orion Township Parks and Recreation, the Orion Art Center, Upland Hills Farm and Crossroads for Youth, as well as Lake Orion schools, such as Camp Wanna Have Fun.
According to Sally Peterson, Camp Wanna Have Fun is a 10-week summer day camp held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Latch key services were also available for those participants that needed.
Peterson added that campers participated in a variety of activities per day, with swimming at the Lake Orion High School pool on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Campers also took field trips to a Detroit Shock game, Kids Kingdom Park, bowling at Collier Lanes and a 4-H Fair in Davisburg.
A variety of other events, such as a water day and visits from a magician and clown also occurred, and the camp was all about having fun.
