Cristi Fisher, 14, isn’t just determined when it comes to saving animals (see story on Page One), but she is also a determined dancer. Even a broken foot won’t stop her from dancing in something as important as nationals.
Fisher, a freshman at Lake Orion High School, has been dancing for 11 years, and when her team traveled to Daytona Beach to participate in the Fire & Ice Nationals, she was excited.
Not only was she getting to dance in a large venue, but it would also be one of her first competitions back, since she missed most of her regular season due to a broken foot injury in March.
After recuperating, Fisher was ready to perform in her solo and group dances.
According to Fisher, all went well the first day when she performed her solo and was awarded a platinum award.
The next day was group, she said, adding that she performed in the first three group numbers and then twisted her foot, rebreaking it.
One of the parents, who is a doctor, took a look at her foot, telling her it was broken and wrapped it for her.
It was then up to Fisher on whether or not she would continue to dance with the group.
‘I danced eight more dances with a wrapped foot,? she said, adding that her team had three of their dances make into the finals, which required her to dance a few more.
Broken foot and all, Fisher danced with her team and they won first place overall with a performance entitled ‘Here comes the sun.? The team was awarded a $1,300 prize.
‘I went to the doctor right away after we got back, and I had to get a cast for the whole summer,? Fisher said, adding that she just got her cast off two weeks ago.
And while she plans on taking it slow, Fisher said that she is dancing again. Not only does she dance for Tina Marie School of Dance, located in both Shelby and Warren, but she is also part of Shockwave, which performs at all the home WNBA Shock games.
