Strong defense key to start hockey season

Oxford varsity hockey Coach Dave Hague knows his young team might not have the offensive firepower that some teams have but the group is defensive-minded and improving almost daily.
‘We are improving since day one and getting stronger,? Hague said. ‘We are a very young team and I am pleased so far with how they have jelled on an off the ice.?
The team has only three seniors and one of them did not play on the team last season.
The team has lost its two Flint Metro League games, both by 2-1 scores, but performed well in pre-season games against high schools in Canada.
This weekend the young Wildcats are playing in a four-team tournament at Perani Arena in Flint.
They will have a 7 p.m. game on Friday and another either at 1 or 3 on Saturday, depending on the outcome of the Friday game against Livonia Stevenson.
Hague said several players have already stepped up and are playing well for the group.
Tim Marney, a junior who is new to the team, is the leading scorer and is playing a very solid left wing.
But, Hague said it is the defense that will be the heart of the team.
Goaltenders Travis Collier, a junior, and freshman Cory Hrischuk have both played well so far.
‘I expect both to step up and be solid in net,? Hague said.
The team is returning four of its solid defensive unit.
The group is led by senior Brian Simpson and include Alex Ignagni, Logan Fulk and Justin Ziegelbaur.
Hague said Ziegelbaur, a junior, has started the season in great shape and has really emerged as one of the leaders of the Wildcats.
‘He has put forth a tremendous effort and we are counting on him to lead our defense,? said Hague. ‘He is part of the returning leadership on the team.?
Hague said he has seen tremendous progress in the early stages of the season and has high hopes for the team.
‘I expect we will continue to improve as the season progresses. We have improved since day one and are getting stronger every day.?
