Brandon library looking for a few good friends

A love for books and willingness to volunteer’the type of individuals the Friends of the Brandon Township Public Library is seeking.
‘We are readers who love reading and love the library,? says Judy Shirley, secretary. “We come together to do what we can to help the library and try to make it a more meaningful community presence.?
Since the start of the non-profit organization in December 1995, there has been a small group of dedicated members who have strived to keep the group going. This year there are 30 Friends, of which only a half-dozen are active volunteers.
Shirley and the rest of the Friends are looking for new members willing to volunteer time and bring creative ideas to the Friends.
‘We are ever so hopeful that more people will recognize the importance and join the Friends,? said Shirley.
Membership for one year is $10 for an individual, $25 for a family, or $100 for a business or patron. The Friends meet at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every other month, in the Brandon Township Public Library Community Room.
Elisabeth Less, Friends? President, emphasizes the importance of donations to the non-profit organization.
‘We are always happy to have donations, without them nothing is possible,? she said.
The Friends of the Brandon Township Public Library raise funds from book sales and special fundraisers. Last year, the Friends of the Brandon Library donated about $7,500 to the Brandon Township Library to help purchase a variety of items. These items include: funding for Grassroots and other music series, providing personal delivery to homebound patrons, purchasing benches for the exterior, postage for mass mailing of library sequel newsletters, as well as funds for children’s books and adult programs.
Each month on the third Saturday of the month, the Friends of the Library hold a book sale. This month’s sale will be Oct. 21, during Brandon Township Library’s hours. In addition to the monthly book sale, everyday books are for sale at the Brandon Township Library, inside the Friends of the Library alcove. Books can be found at a variety of prices, most commonly under $2.
The Brandon Friends of the Library are always accepting donations. Preferred donations include: books in good condition, CDs, DVDs, audio books, and tapes. Please take any donations to the Brandon Township Library.
