Brandon Township-By nearly a 4-to-1 margin, township voters said ‘no? to a override of the Headlee Amendment tax rollback provision on the township’s general operations tax levy.
The vote, 345 to 1,290 thwarted a 1.0119-mill, currently about $110 on $200,000 home, from increasing to 1.41 mills during the next 20 years. The increase would have cost taxpayers, with a $200,000 home about $39 per year.
‘We are required by law to fund certain township needs including fire and police, those funds are there,? said Jeannie McCreery, Brandon Township Clerk.
‘However, as far as running the township goes the senior center, transportation, and recreation departments are where the cuts may come from, perhaps some staff too. More than likely we’ll try again in November to get this passed and get the information regarding the millage out there to the public.?
Township Supervisor Ron Lapp says residents will get the service they are willing to pay for.
‘The cost of doing business has increased over the years,? said Lapp. ‘We don’t have to have a senior center, or a future park, we don’t have to gravel our roads. I will not allow the township to run in the red.
Voters in Atlas Township approved a one-year renewal for five years to continue fire department services by a 2-to-1 margin. In Genesee County six of 30 ballot proposals were rejected by voters. In Oakland County only three of 33 ballots proposals were not supported by voters.
