Ortonville- Oxford Bank reported last week that a counterfeit $10 note was recovered by a teller at the local branch.
Cynthia Edgett, Oxford Bank assistant vice president says counterfeit money is not too common in the area.
‘We receive about two to three notes each year,? said Edgett. ‘Many times the teller can identify the bill by touch, in this case the thickness of the paper it was printed on.?
Edgett says that if customers question the authenticity of any currency they should bring the note to a bank for verification. The United States Secret Service is notified once the note is identified.
According to the Department of the Treasury on March 2, 2006, the Federal Reserve banks issued a redesigned Series 2004 $10 note to the public through commercial banks. New money designs are being issued as part of an ongoing effort to stay ahead of counterfeiting. The new series began with the introduction of the $20 note on Oct. 9, 2003, and continued with the $50 note issued on Sept. 28, 2004.
