Brandon’s varsity baseball team headed north Saturday, May 27 and left there on a positive note.
The Blackhawks came away with a doubleheader victory against Sault Ste. Marie that day, winning the first game 7-1 and the second game 13-7. Brandon’s record is now 13-19.
After a scheduled June 1 doubleheader at Clarkston, Brandon is scheduled to open district play Saturday, June 3 against Macomb Lutheran North at Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. If they win, the Blackhawks will take on the winner of the scheduled Orchard Lake St. Mary’s-Notre Dame Prep game for the district title.
In the first game, the Blackhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an Andy Harding two-run homer, and Ray Reynolds shut down the Blue Devils the rest of the way, throwing a complete game one-hitter and striking out five.
Travis Spry and Matt Cinader added two hits apiece for the Blackhawks.
In the second game, the Blackhawks scored six runs in the third inning on their way to the win. Brandon stole eight bases and drew eight walks against the Blue Devils in the second game.
Jake Feltner, Jeff Carroll and Ryan Claycomb contributed two hits apiece for Brandon, while Robert Thompson was the game’s winning pitcher, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight.
The Blackhawks were not quite as successful in a May 25 game against Swartz Creek, losing a 10-7 contest to the Dragons.
