The Brandon girls track team continued their spring tradition of winning league championships at the May 24 Flint Metro League meet.
The Blackhawks won their second straight Flint Metro League championship, and their seventh league championship in nine years, by taking first place in the meet at Linden High School with 123 points. Fenton was second with 105, while Oxford was third at 85.
Brandon’s first place finish, combined with their 7-0 league dual meet record, was enough to give them the league title. The Blackhawks previously won five straight Oakland Activities Association titles from 1998-2002.
Meanwhile, the Blackhawk boys team finished sixth out of eight teams at the league meet, compiling a total of 37 points. Fenton won the meet with 123 points, while Linden finished second (108) and Holly third (100).
The final league standings mirrored the teams? finishes in the meet, with Fenton winning the league title ahead of Linden and Holly, and the Blackhawks finishing sixth overall.
In the girls meet, Brandon earned four first-place finishes, and finished one-two in two of those events.
Kelly Wilson and Kelsey Carmean topped the field in the 3,200 meters, with Wilson finishing in 11:48.19 and Carmean clocking in at 12:00.74. Sarah Bond and Savannah Stedman did likewise in the discus, as Bond set a league meet record with a throw of 132?4?, while Stedman finished second at 116?8?.
Bond also won the shot put in 38?10?, while Stedman won the high jump with a mark of 5?2?.
The Blackhawks were also well represented in the pole vault, with three team members placing second through fourth. Sherri Lawrence and Megan Ostrowski each had vaults of 8?6? (Lawrence finished second on a tiebreaker) while Brett Auger had a vault of 8?.
Jawan Simpson and Nick Mackie notched the best finishes for the Blackhawks, with each placing third in their respective events. Simpson ran the 100 meter dash in 11.29, while Mackie finished the 300 meter intermediate hurdles in 41.19.In addition, the 400 meter relay team also finished third with a time of 45.287.
Josh Papineau earned a fourth-place finish for the Blackhawks in the shot put with a throw of 44?1/2?, and the 800 meter relay team also finished fourth with a time of 45.287.
The Blackhawks earned three fifth-place finishes at the meet ? Simpson in the 200 meter dash (24.01) and Kyle Worden in the 100 meter dash (11.6) and discus (127?5?).
