Running to the Morgan sisters is as a natural as flying to a bird or swimming to a fish. Jenny and Stephanie Morgan are a one-two punch any track team would love to have.
Jenny is the older of the two. She won three state championships last season and would like to add a few more on June 3 before she heads to the University of Michigan in the fall.
Stephanie is a freshman, but has already shown she is just as talented as Jenny. Stephanie broke Jenny’s record in the 800-meters at the OAA I meet last week and defeated Jenny to win the 1600-meters at the Oakland County meet on May 26. Jenny finished in second place and less than a second behind her younger sister.
The two are competitive, but openly root for each other. Stephanie said it’s nothing personal but she also hopes to break Jenny’s school records in the 3200 and 1600-meters. Jenny doesn’t mind at all.
‘I’m sure she will break them,? Jenny said. ‘She has more speed than I did at that age. I know she can break them and I hope she does. Records are meant to be broken.?
Stephanie credits Jenny with teaching her different techniques and finding ways to help motivate her. The relationship is not one way though. Stephanie played a big role this season for her older sister.
Jenny has been recovering from a foot injury she suffered in the fall. Stephanie made sure Jenny stayed patient and did not try to rush back too early from the injury.
Jenny returned with a vengeance and won the 1600 and 3200-meters at the regional just three weeks after coming back. The two sisters feed off each other and love to see the other succeed.
‘Sometimes if we run together she will tell me to stay beside her. Right now she is getting back into shape so at the regional meet she told me to help her,? Stephanie said. ‘We go back and forth. Age, doesn’t matter we just help each other a lot.?
The two will attempt to make sure Clarkston continues to have it’s most successful season in school history when they compete at the state finals.
The Wolves already went undefeated in dual meets, won the regional with a record amount of points, won the OAA I meet and the Oakland County meet.
The only thing left is the state finals, where the Morgan sisters plan on bringing home some state championships.
Clarkston Distance Coach Jamie LaBrosse said he expects the two to go one-two in the mile, Jenny to win the 3200-meters and Stephanie to win the 800-meters.
Stephanie has never been to the state finals, but she is not intimidated. She echoed her coach’s expectations.
‘I want to win the mile or go 1-2 with Jenny as long as both of our times are good,? Stephanie said. ‘I also want to win the 3200-meter relay and the 800-meters. We want to win the team championship. It’s a lot, but it’s something we are going to go for. We have to make sure we are running our best and it should be fun.?
Jenny’s high school career will come to an end on June 3, but she confident the program will be fine next season with Stephanie back for three more years.
