Thirty-five teams from across the area gathered at Waldon Middle School for the American Cancer Society’s Annual 24-hour Relay for Life event, on May 20 and 21.
This year’s relay honored nearly 100 cancer survivors in the touching Survivor’s Victory Lap, and included a speech by 11-year-old Alexa Adkins.
Adkins, an Oakview sixth-grader, has undergone 14 surgeries to treat Melanoma, and said that 35 family members have died of cancer.
Her presence certainly motivated the large crowd on hand to keep fighting for a cure.
According to event chairperson Teri Donaldson, congressman Joe Knollenberg and Oakland County Commissioner Eric Wilson were also on hand to read a letter from Governor Jennifer Granholm during the opening ceremonies.
