Despite losing their two most recent nonleague matches, the Goodrich varsity boys tennis team believes it will do well in their upcoming league tournament.
This year, the Martians, along with Atherton, Durand and Mt. Morris (like Goodrich, all three other schools are normally affiliated with the Genesee Area Conference) have formed an independent league for boys tennis. Their league tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, May 23 at Atherton.
Goodrich coach Roger Conn said he is ‘very confident? the Martians will match up well against their three league opponents.
‘I fully anticipate us winning the league,? he said. ‘We’ve played each team twice, except for Durand, and we’re 5-0 against those teams. As far as individual flights are concerned, we have the potential to win every flight. It depends on how the kids come out to play.?
Conn said he anticipates more teams will join their league in the near future, specifically mentioning Lake Fenton with their new high school.
‘We’re hoping we can add one or two GAC teams each year,? he said.
In their most recent action May 3 at Brandon, the Martians lost 7-1. In singles action, Brad Christensen lost to Josh Coudret at #1 singles 1-6, 5-7; Duane Engleman lost to Ryan McCabe at #2 singles 0-6, 3-6; Mike Iden lost to Steve Sanday at #3 singles 0-6, 3-6; and Justin Slade lost to Ryan Reynolds at #4 doubles 1-6, 2-6.
In doubles action, Adam Bishop and Joel Martin lost to Garrett Warrilow and Andy Collier at #1 doubles 0-6, 0-6; Alex Slivka and Matt VanSumeren lost to Troy Nuccio and Scott Thurman at #2 doubles 0-6, 2-6; Jacob McCormick and Mike West defeated Alex Burbo and Steve Pupillo at #3 doubles 6-4, 4-6, 7-5; and Tyler Rose and Dustin Brooks lost to Aaron VanDis and Brad Kerin at #4 doubles 3-6, 0-6.
