Goodrich’s varsity baseball team proved it can win in any type of fashion during its May 8 doubleheader against Lake Fenton.
After a first-game shootout which saw the Martians come out on top 16-11, Goodrich pitcher Tom Holton went the distance in the second game as the Martians earned an 8-2 win.
The Martians are now 14-6 overall and 10-2 in the Genesee Area Conference Red Division.
In the opening game, the Blue Devils opened the game with four runs in the top of the first before the Martians answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Goodrich then scored four more runs in the top of the second inning and never lost the lead.
Dusty Bourassa went 5-for-5 in the game with four runs scored and three RBI, while Eric VanderKarr went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.
In the nightcap, Holton struck out seven and allowed just three hits in picking up the victory. The Martians benefited from a three-run fifth inning in which they scored three runs, and that was enough to seal the Goodrich victory.
Bennett Gillam went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Jake Bourassa went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Goodrich’s May 5 doubleheader against Carmen-Ainsworth was evidence of how mistakes can come back to haunt a team.
The two teams split the twin bill, with Carmen-Ainsworth winning the first game 15-7 and Goodrich winning the second game 6-2.
Goodrich pitchers had a rough time in the opener, hitting six Carmen-Ainsworth batters and walking five more. The Martians tried coming back in the fifth inning, scoring five runs to cut the Carmen-Ainsworth lead to 10-7, but the Cavaliers scored one run in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.
The roles were reversed in the second game, as Carmen-Ainsworth hit two Goodrich batters, walked four more and committed two errors.
Dusty Bourassa pitched a complete game and gave up just five hits and two walks while striking out seven. He also went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The Martians came from behind in the second game of a May 4 doubleheader against Montrose to earn a sweep of the twin bill.
Freshman Caleb Jones hit a game-winning double in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Ty Purdy and Dusty Bourassa and giving the Martians an 8-7 victory. Goodrich also won the opener 8-1.
In the nightcap, the Martians took a 3-0 lead after the fourth inning, scoring two runs in the first and one in the fourth. Montrose came back to score two runs in the top of the fifth and five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 7-3 lead.
The Martians chipped away at the lead with one run in the bottom of the sixth, and then made their big comeback in the bottom of the seventh.
Jake Bourassa started things off with a walk, then Dom Rivera bunted for a base hit and Purdy walked to load the bases. Dusty Bourassa reached first on an error, scoring Jake Bourassa and setting up Jones? heroics.
In the opener, the Martians scored in every inning except the fourth and seventh, and every starter got a hit, with Jake Bourassa, Gillam and Dusty Bourassa tallying two hits apiece.
The Martians also received solid pitching from winning pitcher Jake Bourassa and Rivera, who combined to allow just one walk.
