Deliveries might soon have a new route, as the FedEx Corporation is lining up a large site in Orion Township.
Plans are in the works for a ground distribution center next to the General Motors assembly plant on Brown Road.
Township Zoning/Planning Administrator Beth McGuire said the proposal is for an approximately 25-acre site on the northwest corner of Brown and Giddings.
The plan calls for a 188,000- foot building, with room for expansion, employing around 250 people, though both McGuire and Township Supervisor Jerry Dywasuk were unsure what percentage of jobs would be new as opposed to transferred.
Dywasuk noted that some improvements will be made to the intersection, but said the plan will have a minimal impact on the township in terms of traffic flow.
‘There are certain parts of the township that we won’t be able to protect forever,? he said, noting that with current industrial park zoning, the FedEx center seems like a good fit.
‘That property had been vacant for some 20 years,? he added. ‘And it’s a perfect spot for access, as far as being near I-75 and Lapeer Road.?
The site plan was conditionally passed by the Planning Commission on May 3. ‘It was conditioned on them supplying a few pieces of information,? McGuire said. ‘But I don’t see that as being a problem.
McGuire noted that the site plan must then receive a final engineering approval and pass through the building department.
‘It’s a pretty straightforward site plan,? she said.
