The Goodrich varsity baseball team took advantage of several miscues by visiting Byron to earn a league victory April 13.
The Martians took advantage of nine walks and three errors by Byron to win the game 16-2 in a five-inning game, which was the first of a scheduled doubleheader against the Eagles. The second game was called due to darkness.
Goodrich is now 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Genesee Area Conference play.
Both teams scored in the first inning, with Goodrich taking a 2-1 lead into the top of the second inning. Then the Martians erupted for nine runs in the top of the second inning to put the game out of reach.
Goodrich sent 14 batters to the plate during the inning. The Martians had five walks and five hits in the inning, including three doubles (one each by Dom Rivera, Ty Purdy and Steve Hughes).
Wes Coleman, Rivera and Caleb Jones each had two hits, while Purdy drove in three runs.
Tom Holton was the winning pitcher for the Martians, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits, walking two and striking out two in four innings of work. Jones worked the last inning of the game for the Martians
