Goodrich’s varsity football team found out firsthand why Montrose is still a program to be reckoned with.
The visiting Rams shut down the Martians on their way to a 35-0 win in a Sept. 16 Genesee Area Conference Red Division matchup. Montrose improved to 2-2 on the season, while Goodrich fell to 1-3.
Montrose wasted no time taking command of the game, scoring eight points in the first quarter and 13 points in the second. Goodrich was limited to two first downs and 15 yards rushing in the first half.
Goodrich had a scoring opportunity late in the second quarter, when the Martians recovered a fumble on the Montrose 11-yard-line. However, senior kicker Jessica Engler missed a 28-yard field goal attempt.
The Martians had their hands full for their Homecoming game Sept. 23, as they were scheduled to take on Lake Fenton that evening.
The Blue Devils are 4-0 this season and 2-0 in Genesee Area Conference Red Division play after a 49-12 win against Clio in an Sept. 16 game.
Goodrich’s next game is Sept. 30, when they travel to Mt. Morris for a GAC Red matchup. The Panthers are currently 1-3 overall and 1-0 in league play after winning their league opener 13-10 on Sept. 16 against Durand.
Last season, the Panthers went 3-6 overall and 2-3 in league play. Goodrich defeated Mt. Morris 56-0 in 2004 and 37-29 in 2003, while the Panthers earned a 41-14 win against the Martians in 2002.
