Sentencing in arson case on hold

Closure in the arson case on Main Street December 3 is delayed until the defendant is mentally ready.
Emily O’Connor, 19, will not receive her sentence until she demonstrates competency to the professionals at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ann Arbor.
The charges stemmed from a December 3 argument between O’Connor and her mother which led to a fire causing an estimated $50,000 in damage and sent the mother to the hospital.
O’Connor, plead guilty on March 8, to one count of arson and one count of assault and battery of her mother. She now faces from two to 20 years on the arson count. O’Connor also faces up to 93 days for the assault and battery to run concurrent.
According to assistant prosecutor Barbara Morrison, O’Connor was disruptive during sentencing procedures on March 22 and thought to be incompetent by March 24.
Morrison said the Center for Forensic Psychiatry ruled O’Connor incompetent for sentencing on May 16. She will be treated until competency is verified. Morrison explained how professionals at the center felt they had the appropriated treatment for O’Connor.
‘Nothing goes on until she’s found competent,? said Morrison.
