It wasn’t easy, but the Goodrich varsity boys basketball team broke through for their first league victory.
Trailing 38-32 heading into the final period, the Martians came back to defeat visiting Mt. Morris 57-50 in a Dec. 17 Genesee Area Conference Red Division contest. The Martians improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Michael Skinner and Keith Brotherton came through in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 and six points, respectively, to spark the Goodrich comeback. Skinner led the Martians with 14 points in the game, while Brotherton added 11.
Goodrich jumped out to an 11-4 first quarter lead, but the Panthers? Jordan DeRosia scored six of his nine points in the second as Mt. Morris came back to take a 20-19 halftime lead.
The Panthers? Joe Kish scored seven of his team-leading 13 points in the third quarter as Mt. Morris increased their lead, setting up the fourth-quarter comeback by the Martians.
Kirk Elsworth led the Martians in rebounding with seven, while Skinner and Ben Wilson pulled down five board apiece.
