Quilter’s heaven

Members of the Oakland County Quilt Guild packed the First Baptist Church of Lake Orion April 16-17, as they brought their sixth annual Quilt Celebration to Lake Orion.
The event at the church on Scripps Road drew hundreds from across the area to view quilts, both for exhibition and contest, to visit various quilting vendors and take classes and hear lectures from Denver resident, quilter Harriet Hargrave.
Co-chair Carol Grossman, who coordinated the event with co-chair Sharon Finton, said the event was held in Rochester and brought in 2,000 spectators. The show is held every two years, and this was its first time in Lake Orion.
The event had 303 registered quilts in a two-level show. Certified judges from the National Quilting Association participated in the show.
‘We have quilts from all over Michigan, along with some from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Arkansas,? said Grossman. ‘We give out $1,050 in prize money.?
Also on display was a quilt worked on by all the guild members, which would be given to the person holding a winning raffle ticket. The Lake Orion Baptist School Senior Class operated a food court for the event, as a class fundraiser.
