Charles Yoakum, 83

Charles “Chuck” Yoakum, born on July 4, 1941, passed away unexpectedly on March 15, 2025 in Lake Orion, Michigan.
Chuck proudly served his country as a Navy corpsman attached to the Marines during the Viet Nam War. After his service, he earned a B.A. in journalism from California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo and began his career as a beat reporter. He later transitioned into corporate communications, serving as Shell Oil’s youngest head speechwriter, before moving into public relations management for several Fortune 500 companies.
In his late 50’s, Chuck faced a major life change after suffering a massive stroke that sidelined him from the corporate world. Upon recovery, he embarked on a second career in education, becoming a full-time substitute teacher at Lake Orion High School for the next 25 years. He cherished his time there and considered the faculty and students his extended family.
Chuck’s infectious sense of humor and warm presence brought smiles to those around him. A lifelong lover of books, he was rarely seen without one in hand. His passion for music — especially the blues — led him to play harmonica with the 29th Street Blues Band for over a decade. An all-around athlete, he lettered in baseball and football during school, enjoyed skiing and fast-pitch softball, and later in life became an avid golfer. A devoted dog lover, he always had a golden retriever by his side.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Charlotte Yoakum. He is survived by his children, Charles A. Yoakum and Rose DuLude, as well as his four grandchildren: Sophie, Milo, Cooper and Calvin.
Chuck’s memory will live on in the many lives he touched through his kindness, humor, and unwavering spirit.
