Senior Jerome “Cheese” Clevidence stood up at the urging of his teammates and coaches and began dancing on the field after last Friday’s 47-7 win over West Bloomfield.
“I guess everyone does it,” he laughed.
Clevidence scored the final touchdown for the Wolves after a handoff from quarterback Brad Barker. He ran 15 yards into the endzone for his first touchdown with the Clarkston Varsity Football team.
“It was exciting,” he smiled. “The adrenaline kicked up. I was thinking a lot of things but focused on the ball and getting through to the endzone. I had good blocking from the guys. I thank my team for everything. They are great.”
The Wolves scored four minutes into the game on their first possession with a 6-yard touchdown run from Ian Eriksen, his first of three.
Before the first half closed the boys scored three more touchdowns. One came from Eriksen on a 2-yard run and the second Alex Dicea after catching a 18-yard pass from quarterback D.J. Zezula.
Chris Calvano got the fire started on the next touchdown when he intercepted the Lakers’ pass and ran to the endzone. He was finally stopped on the 3-yard line.
Two plays later Eriksen broke through the defense block enough to get in the endzone on his 1-yard run with 3:50 left in the first half.
Caine Watlington was the first to score in the second half on a 21-yard run, finishing a 80-yard drive in nine plays.
Less than two minutes into the final quarter Jason McCowan took the handoff from Zezula for his 1-yard run into the endzone landing on a pile of Laker defenders and Wolves players.
Calvano led defense with blocking West Bloomfield.
“He was outstanding defensively,” said Kurt Richardson, head coach. “Holy smokes! He was all over the field. He had one of the best games I have seen so far from a linebacker in a long time.”
Eriksen rushed 183 yards on 22 carries.
Kicker Shane Hynes made five of his six PAT attempts.
“D.J. was pretty good tonight,” Richardson added. “Caine was good again.”
“It was a good game,” said Clevidence. “It was tough. Everyone played as a team. There were mistakes but we capitalized on them.
The freshman and JV teams also beat West Bloomfield. The freshman won 26-7 and JV, 29-6.
The Wolves host Rochester on Friday. The Falcons are also 1-0 in the OAA Red after their 13-7 win over Troy last Thursday.
“Some things we need to work on but by that time we should be fine,” said Clevidence.
Richardson the strengths going into the game remains to be the Wolves’ running game.
“We have to take care of our lack of discipline,” Richardson added. “It will harm us one of these times.”
Kickoff for varsity is 7 p.m. at Clarkston High School stadium.
