Clarkston High School kickers started their season undefeated during the weekend.
They came back from the Traverse City Invitational winning all three of their games – TC Central, 2-0, Petoskey, 3-0, and Traverse City West, 2-1.
“They did fantastic,” said Coach Chuck Lawhorn. “They played fantastic.”
Senior Alex Wilson led on the field as senior Nathan Gill led in the net. Wilson scored four goals during Saturday’s games and Gill had two shut outs as goalie.
“Gill played great,” said Lawhorn. “Every ball around the middle – he grabbed. I am proud of the way he stepped up and played.”
Other performances came from Jordan Kieft with two goals and Conor Bright with one.
“Everyone played really hard,” Lawhorn added the boys visit at the Saline tournament helped their game.
“It was a wake up call for them and it let them know what they needed to do to be successful,” said Lawhorn. “We didn’t play very well, we weren’t organized.”
Lawhorn said things turned around when the boys came back and practiced every day.
“We had a good week of practice and we were mentally and physically ready to play.”
The boys played rivals Lake Orion on Tuesday for the first game for OAA Red league play.
“It will be a good test against Lake Orion to tell us where we are at in the league,” Lawhorn said on Monday.
The Wolves host Rochester on Thursday.
“We match up pretty well,” said Lawhorn. “I think we will do a really great job. Every opponent is tough in the OAA.”
Then, the boys host Detroit Catholic Central next Tuesday. For both home games, JV plays at 5:30 p.m. at Clarkston High School stadium, varsity follows.
