Grapplers split their dual meet last Wednesday, beating Flint Carman- Ainsworth and falling to Rochester for the first time in 25 years.
Senior Matt Vandermeer got the night rolling in the boys 43-30 win over Carman- Ainsworth, winning the first match with a fall 4:53 against Tae Pendelton in the 171-pound weight class.
Mitchell Manns (215) was the next to put points on the score when he pinned Eric Bradley with a fall half way through his second period putting the score at 12-6.
Brett Foltz (103) added six with a fall, seven seconds left in the second period. Cameron Wilkie (119), Jeff Sloney (130) and Marc Bosnack (135) also ranked up the points with pins. Matt Wright (112) scored 11 points on Devincent Cook and Micheal Henige (160) won by major decision, 18-5, to close the first meet.
The boys went on to lose to Rochester, 39-25. Vandermeer put the boys on the board first winning by major decision, 10-0, against Jameson Joyce in the 189-pound match.
Scott Devos (185) added six with a fall 1:33 into his matchup against Fabion Villaloss keeping the boys in the lead.
After a series of losses, Cameron Wilkie (119) put a few more points on the board with a 6-1 win.
Jeff Sloney’s pin in the 130-pound weight class put Clarkston two points within Rochester but another series of losses unfolded, putting the Falcons into the lead 30-19.
Kyle Broughton (145), Henige (160) and Chris Calvano (171) kept the boys afloat with the last three wins for the night.
“We did pretty well,” said Coach Andy Auten. “We had too many guys out but the guys that wrestled did a good job.”
Two of the standouts included Henige and Calvano. Henige moved up to the 160-pound weight class to beat Cody Devoe, from Rochester, 5-0. Devoe is currently ranked fourth and Henige holds the sixth spot.
Calvano moved up from the B Team to help the varsity team and wrestled the 171-pound, also moving up from his 152-pound weight class.
He went up against Rochester’s Matt Waskiewisz, ranked seventh in the state. He lost 5-3 after competing for three rounds.
“He had a great match and wrestled very well,” said Auten.
Auten explained some of the starting lineup were missing because of illnesses or injuries.
The boys head to Carlson on Wednesday for a Quad meet and Detroit Catholic Central on Saturday for their Super Duals.
