After a long season of wins, losses and breaking school records, the Oxford Varsity girls swim team ended their season 4th in the Flint Metro League.
The girls competed in the league tournament at home over the weekend, placing 4th overall.
Despite losing a large number of points for the unexpected disqualification of four divers (due to paperwork that was accepted and then rejected by the MHSAA), the Wildcats were able to tough it out and compete with teams like Fenton, Brandon and Clio.
Sophomore Allison Woonton, senior Anna Bonfiglio, and freshmen Jenna Mallard and Anna Daves took 2nd in the 200-medley relay, setting a new school record of 2:07.46.
Senior Tara Nieboer placed 11th overall during the tournament and set a new school record for the 200-freestyle at 2:23.19. Freshman Sarah Skelton placed 14th overall.
Mallard also placed 3rd in the 200-IM, while juniors Caroline Kerbelis placed 6th and Lindsay Krawciw placed 16th.
Daves took 13th in the 50- freestyle, while senior Jen Smillie took 7th in the 100-butterfly, all while creating a new school record of 1:15.56.
Woonton took 3rd in the 500-freestyle, and although Skelton placed 14th, she dropped her time by 15 seconds, which coach Jackie Boswell said was an ‘awesome swim.?
Woonton also took 1st in the 100-backstroke, and created a new school, pool and meet record of 1:05.15. Bonfiglio placed 8th in the 100-breaststroke, and the 400-freestyle relay team of Mallard, Kerbelis, Daves and Woonton took 3rd.
Although no swimmers qualified for state competition, coach Boswell said she’s still ‘really proud? of the girls? hard work throughout the season.
‘All of the swimmers improved throughout the season,? she said. ‘I hope all of them will swim year-round so they can be ready for next season. I’m hoping they’ll come back with a vengeance next year.?
