Powered by Michael Skinner’s long-distance shooting, the Goodrich basketball squad earned its first win of the season.
Skinner connected on five three-point shots as the Martians defeated host Flushing 61-48 on Dec. 16 to improve to 1-2 on the campaign. Skinner wound up with 19 points, while Kirk Elsworth added 13 points and Brett Bowers 12. Brodie Ballard led Flushing with 13 points.
The Martians converted 14-of-21 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Goodrich coach Gary Barns said the Martians? hard work is paying off, especially considering the tough nonconference schedule they face.
‘Brandon and Oxford are both quality teams, and Flushing is a Class A school with a great tradition,? he said. ‘Our kids never stopped believing. We were able to answer them.?
Barns also said Elsworth played ‘extremely well? and Bowers was ‘real tough.?
The host Oxford Wildcats overpowered the Martians in their Dec. 12 contest, earning a 77-62 win.
The Wildcats jumped off to a quick start, outscoring the Martians 22-9 in the first quarter on their way to the victory.
Goodrich’s Charlie Richards led all scorers in the contest, pouring in 19 points and converting three shots from three-point range. Wayne Coulman contributed 11 points for the Martians.
The Martians will return from their holiday break when they host Byron Tuesday, Jan. 6.
