School board meets Jan. 6

School officials have to hit the books after holiday break. The subject: securing a share of $4.35 billion in federal Race to the Top education funds before deadline.
Clarkston Board of Education meets Jan. 6 to discuss a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to participate in the program. Deadline is Jan. 7 for signing, and it must be sent to Michigan Department of Education by Jan. 8. The board tabled the memorandum earlier this month.
Board Secretary Cheryl McGinnis was skeptical.
‘We’re going to have a legislature that could move mountains to change laws for Race to the Top, but couldn’t during the budget crisis,? McGinnis said. ‘I want see what the state wants from us and our federal government wants from our state before I support it.?
Michigan won’t know until April if it is one of the states receiving money from the federal government.
