A half-dozen cases are stacked on the desk of Police Chief Jerry Narsh, and they all revolve around the same Lake Orion couple.
That’s not all, Narsh notes, ‘They’re all felonies.?
The couple has drawn comparisons to Bonnie and Clyde, in part because some of the brazen crimes police say they’ve committed.
And now, the ‘Clyde? in this caper, 19-year-old Anthony David Saferian is facing multiple charges.
‘We were investigating them for possible involvement in some larcenies and a fraud case,? Narsh said. ‘During the investigation, Mr. Saferian and a female friend were brought in for questioning.?
The pair was at the Lake Orion police station on April 5, when something usual happened, according to police.
‘While the female subject was being questioned, Mr. Saferian took a preliminary breath test unit and put it in his pocket,? Narsh said.
The unit was valued at $600 and, after a short investigation, police obtained a search warrant for Saferian’s Broadway apartment two days later.
The unit was recovered at the apartment, but that’s only the start.
Police were called to the same residence early on the morning of April 29 for a ‘disturbance.?
‘During the process of that disturbance, Mr. Saferian was seen smashing the windows and causing $3,000 worth of damage to a friend’s parents? car,? Narsh said.
He was taken into custody on the previous felony charge (a four-year count) and a new charge of malicious destruction of property above $1,000 (a five-year felony) was added.
‘In addition, Mr. Saferian showed signs of being intoxicated,? Narsh noted.
That led to a minor in possession charge, and there were others taken into custody at the same scene.
Another 19-year-old male was cited for assaulting a police officer and Narsh said pepper spray was used to help restrain that individual.
Meanwhile, Saferian is in jail on a $15,000 cash bond after being arraigned last Wednesday.
‘There were several other crimes out of that disturbance call that are still being investigated,? Narsh said.
The police chief added that Saferian and his 18-year-old female friend have been evicted from their apartment.
‘That apartment was a source of crime,? he said.
For Narsh, the idea of a criminal stealing from the police station was particularly disturbing. He called it a ‘crime of arrogance.?
‘When you have someone that will steal from a police station, there’s no fear,? he said.
‘Imagine what they would do to the other facets of society.?
