The Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) awarded Oxford Elementary School the 2008 Education Excellence Award for their Comprehensive Program for Reading.
Teachers Krista Rushlow and Monika Kmiec and principal Debbie Stout accepted the award on May 6 on behalf of OES.
This prestigious award is given in recognition of the OES reading program that supports struggling readers, which includes the volunteer Reading Mentor Program, Early Intervention in Reading, instruction conducted by grade 3-5 teachers, Buddy Reading with Daniel Axford students, and the Summer Reading Program developed by Rushlow, supported by a grant written by Kmiec.
Although the award was presented to OES, Stout said it’s important to note that all of the elementary schools in the district should be equally proud.
‘Our District Language Arts curriculum, instruction and on-going staff development have provided the basis for our students? success,? she said, noting that the support the school receives from the Oxford Public Library is also key to their success.
‘Of course, I am especially proud of the OES staff and parents who conscientiously teach and re-inforce the importance of learning,? she said.
Along with this award, the school also earned the chance to compete against other programs in its category for the title of ‘Michigan’s Best,? which will be announced this call at the MASB conference in Traverse City.
MASB developed the Education Excellence Award program 14 years ago to recognize exemplary and innovative educational programs that foster school improvement and student achievement. Twenty-seven programs received awards this year.
