Even with all the amenities of modern technology in homes today, being cooped up for too long can still drive people stir-crazy. That cabin fever feeling, the need to just get outside.

During the stay-at-home order issued by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday and the previous close of nearly all businesses and prohibitions on large groups meeting, many people may be wondering what they can do and where they can go.

Luckily for Orion residents are approximately 500 acres of parkland in Orion Township, said Parks and Recreation Director Aaron Whatley.

“It’s a great time to get out. Make sure you follow the recommendations from the CDC and World Health Organization of social distancing (six feet apart). But Orion Township is flush with green space and trails and safety paths.

“So, as the weather starts to break and you’re feeling cooped up, make sure you get out and enjoy a hike, enjoy a walk, go look at some birds and get your mental and physical health back up,” Whatley said.

The Parks and Recreation Office and park playgrounds – not open parkland – are closed through April 13. Anyone in need can call the township’s Help Hotline at 248-391-0304 ext. 3507.
