Salvation Army’s new Thrift Store in the former Farmer Jack at Sashabaw and Waldon is open just in time for the holidays.
“We have lots of good, unique gift ideas,” said Colleen Kinney, director of community relations for The Salvation Army, Southeast Michigan, Adult Rehabilitation Center. “This is also an important time to drop off donations for tax donation, before the end of year.”
The 41,000-square-foot store includes racks of clothes and accessories, electronics, books, furniture, sporting goods, housewares, jewelry, shoes, bikes, appliances, mattresses, bedding, appliances, and seasonal items such as lawn mowers and snowblowers.
“Donations Clarkston has given us have been fabulous,” said Athena Thomas, manager. “We have a lot of designer clothes, shoes, high-end purses.”
The store, which employs 55, opened Nov. 7 to a crowd of about 700, Kinney said.
“We’ve had plenty of shoppers so far,” she said. “We’re really thankful for the support of the community ? it provides the budget for the Adult Rehabilitation Center.”
The center helps participants learn to live a balanced lifestyle through work therapy, individual and group counseling, and the practical application of the Christian faith, she said.
The two-and-a-half month thrift-store project included removing refridgeration equipment, replacing some floors, and installing 10 fitting rooms.
“This is a favorable location ? this seems to be where the population is moving,” Kinney said.
The building also serves as a drop-off site for donation of new and gently-used items from the public. They also pick up donations ? call 866-GIVE TOO for information. All donations are tax deductible.
Store hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. It is closed Sundays, but donations are accepted at the back loading dock, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
