Cagers made an impact coming back from their holiday break ready for action ? taking down two teams last week.
The boys opened their OAA Red match up against North Farmington last Thursday with three field goals, courtesy of seniors Mitch Baenziger and Nick Tatu.
Theycontinued the ride to a 66-32 win over the Raiders to remain unbeaten.
“It is win number seven in a long season,” said Dan Fife, long-time head coach for the Clarkston Boys Varsity Basketball team. “I am happy with the win. I am proud of the way we played defensively.”
Aiding to the boost in the score, the Wolves scored 13 shots behind the 3-point arc with junior Jordan Dasuqi scoring six and Baenziger and Tatu made three each.
“It just worked out that way,” said Fife. “Our kids shot the ball well. They caught us on an odd night. If it was another night it could have been a different story.”
The boys continued to hold onto the lead going into the second quarter ahead 18-6. North Farmington scored a three pointer to push them more ahead. Dasuqi responded with his own field goal.
North Farmington added one point from the free throw line before the Wolves boosted the score with two more 3-point shots from Baenziger and Mark Tynan, putting the score 27-12. They added six more points to the board before the first half closed.
“We have a few kids with experience that have played with us for a long time,” said Fife, pointing to Tatu, who has been on the team for four years along with Baenziger, Dasuqi, Matt Dellinger and Zach Collins, on the team for three years. “Those kids should be playing like this because they have experience and they understand what it is all about.”
Baenziger led the team with 21 points during the night.
“I was happy with Mitch,” Fife added. “He didn’t play very good the other night and played better tonight. His effort was the difference, how he took care of the team and the passes he made. He orchestrated the night as point guard.”
Dasuqi scored a game high of 20 points and Tatu added 12 points to the board.
“On any given night if you don’t shoot well you have to stay with it defensively,” said Fife. “Defensively the keys to our game are always Dellinger and Collins. They spearhead what we do up front and it has really worked out well. We couldn’t be where we are at without those two.”
The Wolves beat rivals Lake Orion in a OAA crossover game on Jan. 3, 58-40.
Dasuqi led the team with 19 points and Tatu added 16 points to the score. Dellinger had ten points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.
The Wolves head to Pontiac on Thursday, located at 1051 Arlene in Pontiac.
“Anytime we play Pontiac it is going to be a good game,” said Fife. “You don’t know what’s going to happen but it’s going to be a wild game. It’s going to be exciting and hard played by both teams.”
The boys open next week against Detroit Community at home on Tuesday.
“It is still too early to say where we are at,” Fife added. “We have some things to overcome and height is one of them.”
