The Clarkston Christian Coalition is planning on participating once again in the Habitat for Humanity program.
The Coalition is a combination of seven churches including Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, Sashabaw United Presbyterian Church, Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church, Clarkston United Methodist Church, First Congregational Church of Clarkston, Clarkston Community Church and St. Daniel Catholic Church.
‘Making the commitment to sponsor a Habitat for Humanity house means raising the money and recruiting the volunteers for construction,? St. Daniel Catholic Church Community Christian Service Coordinator Sister Barbara Jean Pelak said. ‘It is a big step of faith. However, those who take the step realize incredible blessing when the church obeys the call to Christ to help our neighbors in need.?
This is the second year the group has participated in the project. Last year they built a home in Pontiac with the help of corporate sponsor Daimler-Chrysler. They will once again be building in Pontiac this year.
‘We feel real good about the project,? Committee member Paul Yackell said. ‘We have grown from two churches to seven. Eventually we would like to grow and have groups like the Optimist and Rotary participate. We definitely want to make it a yearly thing.?
The churches have raised the $20,000 necessary to begin the project and will start on Labor Day weekend.
‘The city of Pontiac contributes the property so it is really a win-win situation,? Yackell said.
The group will host a breakfast at the St. Daniel Parish – Cushing Center on Saturday, July 19 at 9 a.m. Speakers from the St. Daniel Catholic Community Habitat for Humanity Committee will speak about what was done last year and also what is planned for this year. Speakers include Paul and Karen Yackell and Fred Novack.
