Legion donates flags to schools

Oakland County Chapter of Sons of the American Legion representatives stopped by the Clarkston School Board meeting, Nov. 23, with several American flags.
“We want to put American flags back in every classroom,” said Sons of the American Legion representative Randy Jackson.
Jackson, along with Carvin Chapman and David Mennel, attended the meeting to present 41 American flags for several schools in the district.
“We also want to let schools know we can provide funding to replace the big flags outside of schools,” Mennel said.
Several years ago, the stars and stripes were removed from classrooms for various reasons, and Gov. Rick Snyder recently said they need to go back, Jackson said.
American Legion Oakland County Chapter has donated hundreds of flags for classrooms in numerous districts in Oakland County. They plan to continue the program to place flags in every classroom. The project to replace the flags started in 2006.
“These flags are all made in America too,” Mennel said. “When we started this project they wanted to have us buy American flags made in China, and we said ‘no way.?”
The initial donation of 2-by-3-foot flags was $450. Anyone wishing to make a donation can call Mennel at 248-890-6396.
