Congratulations to the Lakeville LEGO Team on their 14th Place finish at the Michigan FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League Regional Competition on Nov. 17.
The competition, which took place at the Macomb Mathematics and Technology Center in Warren, had 23 teams compete.
Lakeville Elementary’s team is comprised of students from Clear Lake Elementary, Lakeville and Oxford Middle School.
At the competition, the team had three rounds to have their robot, aptly named Wildcat, complete certain tasks on the floor. The teams are scored on their project presentation, technical judging, teamwork and robot performance.
This year’s competition theme was energy efficiency. It took the team almost 10 weeks to prepare for the competition.
Lakeville team member Devin Boury got to control the robot during one of the rounds, which he said made him ‘really, really nervous.?
Each team member received a medal for their hard work as well as a plaque for winning Best Robot Design. The team’s youth mentor, and Oxford High School student Robert Hewett, won the Youth Mentor Award.
The team is coached by Jeff Funke, Sherry Hewett and Cheryl Matas, with Ashley Meunchen as another youth mentor. The kids will head to the state competition on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi.
