Lake Orion’s softball team kicked off their season last week on April 9 with a double header against Utica High School. The Dragons came out victorious in both games winning 12-2 and 10-0 respectively.
In their first game, the ladies broke a 0-0 tie in the third inning by getting six hits and scoring a run with each. Tessa Nuss and Courtney Kolp managed several RBIs (Run Batted In). Sarah Conley pitched through 6 innings giving up two runs on two hits with 12 strike outs.
In their second showdown, the Dragons managed to shut out Utica High School.
Kim Sosnowski lead the offensive charge in the first inning with a basses loaded clearing double to the left center gap. This hit helped earn Lake Orion the early lead 4-0 in the first inning.
Kolp and Natalie Shifferd pitched for the Dragons through five shutout innings giving up just two hits in the game.
April 11 the ladies headed to Brandon High School and left with another 10-0 shutout victory in just five innings.
After scoring twice in the first inning, the Dragons amped up the offensive pressure scoring seven runs in the third.
Pitchers Conley and Shifferd combined for a no hitter.
Lake Orion hosted the LO Invitational tournament on April 13 where they competed against eight other schools.
The ladies first game was against the Swartz Creek Dragons. In the battle of the Dragons, Lake Orion gave a dominating performance shutting out Swartz Creek with a 16-0 win.
Nuss lead the Dragons on offense by going four for four with a double, triple and two RBIs. Also adding to the win was Payton Shadaia who went three for three with a triple and had three RBIs.
Lake Orion then took on Milford for their second game of the invitational. Here the ladies secured another big win 18-3.
Hailey Melchert lead the Drgaons two for two with a double, homerun and five RBIs. Nuss also went four for four with a double and two RBIs.
In their thrid game of the tournament the ladies snagged another win against Brandon High School, this time 17-2.
Conley went two for three with a grand slam homerun while Shadaia went three for three with two RBIs. Shifferd pitched a two hitter with four strike outs.
In the final game of the tournament the ladies gained another shut out victory this time against Goodrich.
Melchert went three for three with four RBIs and Conley got the win on the mound by throwing a three hitter with 11 strike outs.
The ladies take on Rochester Adams in another double header match up on April 16 after The Lake Orion Review goes to press. — M.K.
