Lake Orion 5th-graders face off in annual Battle of the Books

Fifth graders in Lake Orion spent last Saturday morning at Waldon Middle School putting their knowledge to the test at the annual Battle of the Books competition.

Battle of the Books is hosted annually by the Orion Twp. Public Library.

Thirty-one teams of local fifth grade students spent the past several months reading 12 previously selected books and preparing to answer questions about those books.

This year’s selection of books consisted of The Great Treehouse War by Lisa Graff, Fortunately, the milk by Neil Gaiman, James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl and Her Right Foot by Dave Eggers, to name a few.

Winners were announced at a special award ceremony on Tuesday at Lake Orion High School.

The team with the most correct answers and first place winner of the 2020 Battle of the Books were Retro Readers consisting of Landon Avey, Tyler Mollan, Camille Robinson, Gabby Smith and Griffin Taylor.

In second place was Book Chicks made up of Brooke Bronczyk, Olivia Geese, Cadence Ratza, Layla Sponsky and Kara Veeder.

Third place went to Comical Readers comprised of Elyse Avey, Grace Basye, Adelaide Choi and Caleb Misch.

Special awards were also given out for Best Costume (Cloudy with a Chance of Books — Paige Anderson, Cybella Cowley, Kamryn Dimeo, Landon Florence and Ruby Hall), Best Name (Starbooks — Emma Brennan, Isabel Campos, Madison Montgomery and Juliet Soave) and Best team Spirit (Save the Books — Sophia Bordes, Keira Courtney, Naomi Goetz, Elijah McDonough and Olivia Wolf).
