Clarkston Boys Varsity Soccer team fell to Stoney Creek, 2-0, in their OAA Red match-up last Thursday.
“The first half was back and forth and the boys were playing well,” said Coach Chuck Lawhorn. “Then, the second half, Stoney Creek outplayed us. They had a good game which led to a couple of scoring opportunities for them which they finished.”
Both goals were made by Sam Shafer and the Wolves made three attempts on the Cougars’ net.
The game gave them an opportunity to see what they needed to work on while on break to improve their 8-5 record.
“We need to come out with a little more intensity and execute better,” said Lawhorn. “We had a lot of turnovers in the middle of the field which led to some good counters from Stoney Creek. We need to clean some of that up and move forward. We have time to do it in the next few days.?
They will also take into practice what has what worked for them.
The Wolves went two for three at the Oxford Invitational, Sept. 10. They beat Oxford, 2-0, and Goodrich, 3-0. They lost the final game to Midland Dow, 4-0.
The Wolves next game is on Thursday when they host Troy-Athens, then Tuesday, hosting Rochester.
“Athens is a solid team but as long as we work harder during practice we have a good opportunity to pull out a win,” said Lawhorn.
Not only is it a league game but Lawhorn believes a few players will help with a win including Brad Schultz.
“He is playing in the middle of the field now and doing well,” said Lawhorn. “He stepped up in the Lake Orion game and I am looking for another big game from Brad.”
He is also hopeful Conor Bright will be back on the field after taking a break due to an injury.
“This week’s break helps with nagging injuries,” he said.
Thursday is a special night because it is Youth Soccer Night. Kids wearing soccer jerseys get into the game for free and can participate in a soccer shoot-out during the varsity game’s half time break. Each child who makes a goal gets a free hot dog. Plus, prizes and free T-shirt throughout the night.
“The players like to watch the kids shoot on goal,” Lawhorn added about the Wolves excitement for the night. “They like running over and shooting T-shirts into the crowd. It is fun to get all the younger kids out there . The boys enjoy it. “
JV begins at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
