Horseshoe club wins its first Woody Cup

The Lake Orion Horseshoe Club’s Thursday Sanctioned League won a horseshoe pitching tournament July 13 at Children’s Park against a sanctioned league from the St. Clair Shores Horseshoe Club.
It was Lake Orion’s first victory in the third year of the annual competition called the Woody Cup Challenge.
The tournament is played with 10 players from each team being paired up by having their names drawn randomly and throwing 40 shoes in a count-all scoring method.
Scores are handicapped, with wins being worth two points and ties worth one point. Players are rotated after each game.
The final score of the challenge was 53-27.
The Woody Cup was established in 2004 by Larry Woods, of Kimball, MI, and LDJ Trophies to promote the sport of organized horseshoe pitching in Michigan.
A new trophy is created each year and the winning team must put it on public display for the following year.
A total of $175 was donated to the Junior Fund of the State Horseshoe Pitching Association from entry fees paid and other donations.
