Scott Devos had only six minutes left then the two days at the Oakland County Wrestling meet would be done.
But before he left the mat, he had something to do – beat Southfield’s Darius Durrett on Saturday at the Pontiac Silverdome.
Minutes later he accomplished the goal becoming the 285-pound weight class champion after winning the match, 6-2.
The Wolves took fourth place as a team with 216 points. Novi Detroit Catholic Central took the top spot with 343.5 points.Oxford finished in second and Holly took third with 220 points.
“I was really hoping for third,” Coach Andy Auten admitted.
“It is hard for us to compete with DCC and Oxford right now but we should have stayed ahead of Holly. We lost a senior to an injury that really hurt.”
Clarkston had five other wrestlers place during the tournament.
Jeff Sloney (130) took second place after a loss to Andrew Napieraj from Birmingham Brother Rice, 4-3. Matt Vandermeer also took second against Holly’s Shawn Scott, losing 10-5 in 171-pound weight class.
Mike Henige (160) defeated Nick Zackovich, 8-3, to take third place. Ethan Frick (189) took fifth place and Ty Foltz (145) finished in sixth.
The boys defeated Waterford Kettering during their Wednesday meet, 51-11.
“They wrestled well,” said Auten. “But a few guys need to learn they can’t go out there and just win without putting forth the effort.”
Raymond Wilkie got the board going in the 112-pound weight class, defeating Brandon Conrad, 14-13. Cameron Wilkie (119) taking on Scott Stumbaugh and winning, 12-5.
Nick Vandermeer (140) won 4:50 into the match by a injury default.
Scoring big with falls were Jeff Sloney (130), with seven seconds remaining in the first period. Marc Bosnack (135) took Joe Cowse down within 53 seconds. The momentum kept going as Ty Foltz (145), Mike Henige (160), Matt Vandermeer (171) and Scott Devos (285) also won with falls.
Mike Cardinale (125) won, 5-0 and Tristan Tozzi (152) won by void.
The boys host Lapeer East on Wednesday night.
“I think our team is starting to be more of a team and we should be fine,” said Auten.
The match begins at 5:30 p.m.
