Despite what Coach Doug Wilson called a subpar performance by the Goodrich varsity boys golf team, the Martians had enough to move on to regionals.
The Martians finished in fifth place in Division 3 district action Sept. 30 at Holly Meadows Golf Course in Capac, earning a team score of 351. That score was good enough for the Martians to advance to Division 3 regional action Friday, Oct. 7 at The Fortress in Frankenmuth.
The top six teams at the Sept. 30 district match advanced to regionals. Flint Powers won the meet with a score of 301, well ahead of second-place Detroit Country Day (318). Macomb Lutheran North (third), Richmond (fourth) and Armada (sixth) also qualified for regionals.
Individually, Tyler Frantangelo led the Martians with a round of 86, while Paul Bermudez and Caleb Jones each shot 87 and Matt Christensen 91.
Wilson said the Martians will have to golf better than they did in district action if they hope to make it to the state meet. The top three teams in regionals advance to states.
‘Our 351 (at districts) was one of our worst days of the year,? he said. ‘We were fortunate to make it out of districts. We’re certainly capable of doing it (making it to states), but we’re going to have one of our best days of the year.?
