Goodrich cagers fall short in district final

The third quarter proved to be the beginning of the end for the Goodrich girls basketball team in their regional final Nov. 21 against host Mt. Clemens.
Mt. Clemens outscored the Martians 20-10 in that period, undoing a 28-26 Goodrich halftime lead and sending them on their way to a 57-50 defeat of the Martians.
The Martians wrapped up their season with a 19-4 overall record, while Mt. Clemens (8-14) faced Flint Powers Catholic in the regional finals Nov. 24 at Davison.
Nykole Pfaff led the Martians with 12 points, while Jacci Brothers added nine points, six rebounds and four steals. Maribeth Barns contributed eight rebounds and five assists, whie Andrea Howell pulled down eight rebounds.
Tashaera Chisolm led Mt. Clemens with a game-high 28 points.
The Martians reached the district finals with a 72-30 thrashing of Richmond Nov. 19. Goodrich put away the game by shutting out Richmond 19-0 in the second quarter to take a 37-7 lead at halftime.
Barns scored 12 to lead the Martians, while Pfaff added 10.
The Martians lose five seniors from this year’s varsity squad: Shannon Harbin, Brothers, Andrea Tubbs, Jacqui Cornwell and Kristan Childress. Returning to the varsity next year are juniors Julie Owen, Ellen Nothhelfer, Barns, Howell and Michelle Elliott, and sophomores Amy Hughes and Pfaff.
