Sophomore Preston Haven found himself surrounded by his teammates on Thursday after scoring a goal.
Beginning the fourth quarter against Davison Haven rushed towards the Cardinals’ net and scored – his first goal for the Clarkston Boys Varsity Lacrosse team.
“It was awesome,” he said smiling after the game. “I will always remember it.”
Haven and his teammates will also remember beating Davison in MHSAA Regional playoff game, 15-1.
“It was a good win,” said Haven. “It started Clarkston in the playoffs. We hope to percieve more wins and be strong in the playoffs.”
Brian Kaminskas, head coach, also agreed it was a good win.
“We had a bye the first round so it was nice to get out there get up and down the field,” he said. “It was a nice decisive win which is exactly what you want going into playoffs.”
The boys started off the game with a goal from junior Kevin Horton at the beginning of the first quarter. Capping off the first quarter were Jordan Kincaid and Travis Craft finishing the first six minutes with two more goals.
Horton came out shooting the next quarter, scoring two minutes in. Three more goals from Alex Dziewit, Kevin O’Grady and Kincaid, put the boys 7-0 before the first half concluded.
The boys added two more before Davison Tyler Hayden struck to score their only goal for the night with 7:29 left in the third quarter.
The Wolves reacted with a goal from O’Grady two minutes later.
They continued holding control of the ball and held it in Davison’s zone.
The ball came loose and junior Mike Vanderweel swooped it up with his stick and ran in front of the net, scoring with 3:38 left in the quarter.
Horton attacked less than a minute later, throwing it from 20 yards away from the net down the middle of the field.
Horton led the team scoring five for the night. O’Grady and Kincaid added three goals each. Craft had three assists and Sharkey had one.
“Matt Goebel had a really nice game in the net,” added Kaminskas. “They came out shooting early and Matt denied them all the way through. Our attackmen played well.
“We were doing a good job moving the ball offensively which gave their defense some issues, some fits,” said Kaminskas. “We had good ball movement which is something we have been good at and proud of all year. It paid off for us.”
Davison finished 8-9 and the Wolves continue on with a 17-1 record.
The boys played Brighton on Tuesday in the MHSAA Regional Semifinal game.
“I am mentally preparing for better teams to play against and some more talents than we have seen in the past,” said Haven, prepping for the game.
“We just need to come and bring as much as we can and our best game of the year,” he continued.
The winner moves on to play the Birmingham Brother Rice/Midland – Bloomfield Hills Andover winner on Friday. The game begins at 7 p.m. at Bloomfield Hills Andover.
“We need to make sure we don’t take the Davison win for granted and come in harder the next round,” said Haven.
