The stellar season for the Varsity Bowling teams came to a disappointing conclusion as both teams failed to qualify for the championship round of the state tournament.
The format to get into the championship was for each team to bowl eight baker games and two team games.
The varsity boys were in the mix to make it to the championship round, but they struggled in the team games, falling short of the lowest qualifying score of 3430 by 255 pins.
‘We were close after baker but just couldn’t get on a roll after that,? said Oxford Bowling Head Coach J.R. Lafnear.
He was proud of how well the boys bowled this season, even if they didn’t get the desired result in the state tournament.
‘The boys had a great season and I couldn’t be prouder. Winning the Regional was a great thrill and a day that the boys will never forget,? Lafnear said. ‘Competing at the state championship level was a great experience for us all.?
The girls didn’t fare any better. Sub-par games in the baker matches and in game one put the writing on the wall for their season, missing the cut by 115 pins.
‘The girls had a incredible season and one they should be proud of. Going undefeated and finishing first in FML league play, qualifying second in regionals and a second place finish at the Oakland County tournament isn’t all bad. Both the girls and the boys set new highs for teams in the future,? said Lafnear.
In the singles portion of the state, Junior Kelly Cartner finished 26th out of a possible 70 bowlers, averaging a 187 over six games.
She fell 73 pins short of making the final round. Lafnear said that she is fun to coach and is a great competitor and wants her to use the finals experience to improve and get better.
‘She represented her school and her team very well,? he added.
The Wildcats had three team members named to First Team All-League ? Senior Steven Lafnear, Senior Ashlee High and Cartner. Senior Brandon Burgess made the third team, while Seniors John Taylor and Junior Mike Magyar were honorable mention for the boys.
Seniors Liz Laframboise and Anna Moses, Junior Sarah Decker and Freshman Heather Lafnear were honorable mention for the girls.
