The Wolves opened the night against Salem with two shots on their opponents’ net.
The shot finally made it past Salem’s goalie while they were two men down. Junior Chase Weidemann passed to senior Adam Johns.
Johns passed it on to junior Garrett Polish who put a shot in top right of the net with 12:05 left to go in the first period.
Salem added three goals for the lead before Clarkston scored again with 1:44 left in the period. Drake Gentile’s shot sent the puck straight into the net and under the goalie’s leg.
Jacob LaPorte, Polish and A.J. Kowal added three more goals but Salem won the game, 8-5.
“It was an unusual game,” said Clarkston Hockey Assistant Coach Roman Krygier.
“We didn’t play strong defensively. We tried to come back. We worked hard but soon as we started to get some momentum we lost it with penalties,? Krygier said. ‘We had too many penalties. You can’t be in the penalty box as much as we were. Out of their eight goals four were power plays. Usually we are strong on the penalty kills but today we just didn’t get things working together for us. Each game is a learning experience. The biggest thing is the discipline. The discipline not to take the penalties and stay out of the penalty box.?
“We had some rough spots getting behind defense leaving some guys open,” Polish added. “We had our chances we just didn’t put them all in which killed us.”
The Wolves made 25 shots on the net.
Junior goalies Jack Viazanko and Nick Surovec helped the team out in the net. Viazanko had five saves and Surovec had 12 saves during the game.
‘Salem had some good scores. They can move the puck pretty well on their power play,” Krygier said.
The Wolves lost to Farmington on Saturday, 4-1.
Junior Shawn Cotter scored the lone goal with 5:11 left to go in the game while Farmington’s Eamon Devlin and Eric Stanis struck twice a piece for their goals.
Surovec had 29 saves during the game as the Wolves made 29 shots on the net.
The Wolves host their Holiday Classic Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Detroit Skating Club, 888 Denison Court in Bloomfield Hills.
Clarkston plays Troy on Friday at 5 p.m. and could face Novi on Saturday, 1 p.m.
