Lady Cagers began last week by taking down their crosstown rivals Lake Orion, 54-31.
“We did some really good things,” said Clarkston Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Tim Wasilk. “We did a pretty good job getting steals and finishing layups throughout the course of the game. It is always nice when you beat your rivals.”
Senior Erin Davenport had 17 points and her sophomore sister Erika Davenport added 16 points to the board.
Clarkston followed it up with hosting Dakota for their first loss in the season, 56-34.
Senior Kenny Delaney opened the game with two points from the free throw line and a basket off the glass to put the girls 4-3. Dakota slowly picked up the paces and caught up by sinking two field goals and three baskets before the quarter ended with them leading, 15-9.
The Lady Wolves closed the gap by scoring eight points in the last five minutes of the first half. They were within two points on the board before Dakota scored on the free throw line.
“The first half we competed and played really well,” said Wasilk. “We had foul trouble during the entire game with Delaney and Erin which made it difficult for us. They continued to hit shots and we continued to struggle on our offensive end.”
Dakota opened the second half with one point from the free throw line before adding another two points before Erin slowed them down with her 3-point shot. Dakota picked up the momentum again halfway through the third quarter with an 8-point run to build up their lead to 42-28.
Another problem was Dakota shooting six 3-pointers in the game.
“We had a tough time defending it,” Wasilk added. They were shooting it deep and shot it pretty well. They had us chasing all over the place. We had a tough time covering, penetrating and knocking down threes.”
Erin and Erika both scored eight points during the game to lead the team.
“They were just a really good team,” said Wasilk. “We are not where we need to be right now and they are. They had a good year last year and returned three starters.”
The Lady Wolves took on league opponents, Avondale, on Tuesday and head to Troy on Friday.
JV begins at 5:30 p.m., varsity follows.
