Free hazardous materials collection on Saturday

The first NoHaz (North Oakland Household Hazardous Waste) collection event is 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday at Oxford Middle School, 1420 Lakeville Rd.
The NoHaz event is free to all Orion Township and Village of Lake Orion residents, who will have to show a driver’s license or other proof of residency when dropping off materials.
2019 collection event pamphlets are available at Orion Township Hall, Village of Lake Orion Hall, the Orion Community Center and the Orion Township Public Library.
To help accelerate the drop-off process, organizers ask that residents separate materials in their trunk, trailer or truck bed into three types: paint, electronics and other household hazardous waste.

Acceptable items include: household paints and stains, driveway sealer, asphalt/roofing tar, pesticides/fungicides, pool chemicals, aerosols, batteries, cleaners/polishers, motor oil, gasoline, antifreeze, car batteries, electronics (computers, televisions, laptops, etc.), mercury, needles/syringes (in puncture-proof containers, inhalers, EpiPens, medications (excluding controlled substances), fluorescent lamps, propane cylinders.
Liquids must be in leakproof 5-gallon containers, or smaller
Bring residential waste only: no business, institution or contractor waste.
Unacceptable materials include: ammunition, explosives, firearms, appliances, asphalt/concrete, Freon, humidifiers/dehumidifiers, tires, radioactive waste and medical waste (controlled substances), according to Oakland County’s NoHaz brochure.
Since NoHaz 2003, when began, Oakland County residents have properly disposed of 6,305,976 pounds of waste, according to Oakland County government. – J.N.
