Sisters Erin and Erika Davenport used their combined scoring abilities to lead the Lady Wolves in their second OAA Red win, this time over Troy last Friday, 58-35.
“We are definitely making strides from our first game,” said senior Delaney Kenny. “We looked like we had everything going for us. Our defense was pretty good. We pulled everything together and had a good win.”
The game began with a basket from junior Carly Giroux. The Lady Colts struck with their own basket to tie the score with five minutes left in the first quarter.
It would be the the last time they would score until the end of the quarter as Erika went to the line for two points. It started her six point run.
Erin was next after capturing the ball from Troy with a steal and putting five more points on the board.
The Lady Wolves finished the first quarter with a basket by senior Patrice Matthews from a pass from Giroux to put the score 18-6.
They opened the second quarter with a basket by Erika from Kenny.
The Colts were heading down to the other side of the court to score when the ball came loose. Sophomore Jessica Altene made a grab for the ball and passed it off to Erika who scored to put the game at 22-6.
The Lady Wolves finished the first half ahead 32-9.
“Our girls came out with a lot of energy and a lot of focus,” said Wasilk. “We were just ready to play and it showed right from the start. Defensively we were pretty solid with our press. We had a lot of steals and moved the ball well on the offensive end. We rebounded on both sides of the floor as well.”
Erika led with 18 points and Erin had 13 points.
Clarkston opened the week with a 47-31 win over OAA foe Avondale.
“We had a good second half,” said Wasilk, referring to the team outscoring Avondale by ten points. “Avondale is pretty talented. Our press did some nice things in the second half.”
Erika led with 24 points and had 16 rebounds. Kacy Robinson scored seven points with one field goal and Kenny had five points and eight rebounds.
Clarkston begins OAA Red play undefeated as they head into this week and Kenny said previous games prepared them for the league.
“Our previous games have been more like practice for us and tests for us,” said Kenny. “It was good preparation. We definitely needed those games to prepare us for Troy.”
The Lady Wolves (4-1, 2-0 OAA Red) host Stoney Creek (4-1, 2-1) on Thursday before going on holiday break.
“It is going to be tough,” said Kenny. “But we have been practicing a lot harder lately. We will be prepared if we keep working hard and will come out with a win.”
“It should be a pretty good game,” Wasilk added.
