The Lady Wolves wrapped their regular season with key victories last week – beginning with claiming the OAA Red league title last Thursday.
‘We were very proud and happy to come out on top of it,? said Becky Freeman, head coach for the Clarkston Girls Varsity Tennis team. ‘It’s probably the toughest league in the state. We are planning on using it as a building block and hopefully winning our region.?
The girls finished the OAA Red Tournament with 43 points, beating Birmingham Seaholm by one point.
Clarkston led the way on the singles courts as they defeated three of their opponents in the championship round winning league titles.
In Singles #1, Lexi Baylis defeated Lahser’s Molly Fox, 6-3, 6-0; in Singles #3, Dana Olsen defeated West Bloomfield’s Sara Cahn, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2; and in Singles #4, Katie Hubregsen defeated Lahser’s Meryl Reams, 1-6, 6-1, 3-0.
Isabella Spindler finished in second place to West Bloomfield’s Aerielle Pendleton, 4-6, 6-3, 4-6.
Paige Olsen and Alex Whall won their championship round on Doubles #1 with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Nancy Benda and Jackie Meier from Seaholm. Caitlin McCaghy and Mackenzie Sowers finished in second place with a loss to Seaholm’s Lauren Benderoff and Sam Lareau.
Freeman explained the doubles teams faced tough matches from their OAA Red foes during the season.
‘Seaholm has some really good doubles,? she added. ‘West Bloomfield is in our region as well.?
Clarkston finished in first place in the final league standings among the seven teams . Seaholm finished in second and West Bloomfield in third.
They also won the Holly Volley Swingabout on Saturday, scoring 20 points and tying with Seaholm during the tournament.
Baylis and Spindler walked away after winning the championship. Baylis defeated Isabel Zheng from Ann Arbor Huron and Spindler beat Seaholm’s Lauren Frazier.
Dana Olsen finished in second place with a loss to Rosa Wu in the championship round.
Paige Olsen and Whall defeated Benda and Meier for the second time in one week for a 5-7, 7-5, 10-4 win. Amy Brozovich and Jordan Stuart finished the championships in second place with a loss to Grosse Pointe South.
Freeman added it was good to see Grosse Pointe since they won the state finals last year by one point.
‘There are some spots they took some courts from us and there were some courts we took from them,? she said.
The girls use this week to prepare for regionals and for a new foe, Farmington Hills Mercy, who moved up this year from Division 2.
Teams have to earn 18 points to qualify for the state finals and Freeman added it will be tough to do within their region because of all the high quality teams.
‘Everybody will have to perform like they have all year,? she added. ‘It will be interesting to see who comes out.?
