Brandon Twp.- In the spring of 2003 a devastating ice storm raged across the area’cutting power lines, blocking roads and stranding thousands.
While the aftermath wreaked havoc on the environment and residents’the elderly and those requiring special assistance may need special attending during such emergencies.
‘We have many seniors out there that are on oxygen,? said McArthur, Brandon fire chief. We may not have a lot of time to go out and check on these individuals during an emergency.?
To contend with the issue Brandon Fire Department will host a meeting at 7 p.m., Dec. 8 at Brandon Fire Department, 53 South St. to discuss the formation of a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
The CERT will be comprised of volunteers from the area to perform a variety of functions including checking on senior citizens and other home-bound persons during times of emergency. The functions will also include helping on duty shifts at the stations, taking supplies or equipment to the site, or assisting in searches for missing persons.
‘They’ll do basic work for us then call if a real problem exists,? said McArthur. ‘Another possible function would be to organize the community if massive shelters are needed.?
To become a CERT volunteer, an individual must complete classroom training offered by the Brandon Fire Department.
‘The program can be use to better prepared residents in their home, in addition to checking on the senior citizens,? said Mike Loper, Emergency Management Specialist for Oakland County. Currently, Rochester Hills, Ponatic,Walled Lake and Southfield have CERT programs. www. co.oakland mi.us/ems.
