Dragon tennis team improves to 14-8-1

The Lake Orion High School Varsity Boys Tennis team had a busy week with matches every day after last week’s wet weather cancelled an entire week of practices and matches.

The Dragons crushed the visiting Almont Raiders 8-0 on Monday, September 27. Senior captain Thomas Fluent led in #1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, followed by senior #2 Jin Yim 6-2, 6-4, and juniors #3 William Durbin 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 and #4 Peter Husted bageling 6-0,6-0. Lake Orion doubles cleared the board with seniors Nate Fox and Blake Skibicki winning 6-2, 7-5 in # 1 doubles, senior Kellen Foley and sophomore Michael Pokorny winning 6-4, 6-1 in #2 doubles, senior Ruben De Los Rios and junior Jake Beach achieving 6-0,6-1 in #3 doubles and sophomore Anthony Roncone and freshman Connor Fox 6-3, 6-3 in #4 doubles.

On Tuesday, the team traveled to meet the Highlanders at Rochester Adams High School and fell 0-8.

On Wednesday, September 29, North Farmington High School met the Dragons on their home turf and were met by #1 singles Fluent who won 4-6, 6-3, 10-2, and #3 singles Durbin also won 6-3, 4-6, 10-4. Three double matches also culminated in tie breaker sets but ultimately ended in defeat, resulting in a 2-9 loss.

Thursday, September 30, the team traveled and played at the three host high schools in Rochester for the OAA League meet. Individual wins were achieved by #1 singles Fluent over Clarkston, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, #2 singles Yim also beating Clarkston 6-2,6-4 and #4 singles Husted over Berkley 7-5, 6-3. #5 doubles team junior Daniel Pavelich and sophomore Pokorny won 6-1, 6-2 over Clarkston.

Friday, October 1, the Dragons hosted West Bloomfield High School and fell 4-5 with two matches decided in tie breaker losses. Senior and #2 singles Yim dominated 7-5, 6-3 and #3 junior Cameron Able won 7-6, 6-1. #2 doubles Foley and Bryce Stanfield cleared the court 6-2, 6-2 and #5 doubles Pavelich and Pokorny won 8-3.

The Dragons have improved upon the season to 14-8-1 and will host Stoney Creek High School in their last home match on Tuesday, October 5 beginning at 4pm.
